Lyra Graphite Pencils
(Doodling)

I had something really interesting happen with this Lyra graphite pencil (or stick as its called).

I have a few different types of water soluble pencils and pens and they all work differently.

When I was creating this particular page I was making my shapes and then using a brush dipped in water to try to fill in the shapes with the color of the stick.

It wasn't coming out so dark and I was feeling a bit disappointed in it because I do love that effect of using a pencil and then being able to get it to move with water.

When I went to link to it on Amazon I saw that first of all they come in many different colors. Secondly I didn't realize that there are different numbers of darkness and lightness and I had a 2B which is much lighter than what I wanted.

The one I linked to is a 9B which will give you much more satisfactory washes.

It kind of works like regular drawing pencils. The B pencils go for 2B to 9B with the higher number being darker. I guess that's how these Lyra pencils work too.

They are very good to use when you are trying to create something realistic and want some shading. In this case, though since I am only working on creating expressively I'm not using it to make anything realistic.
